European Commission President - Von der Leyen promises E-Fuel exemptions for combustion engines

In the dispute over the Verbrenner-Aus, Ursula von der Leyen promises for the case of her re-election as EU-Commission President, a push for exceptions for so-called E-Fuels. To achieve the EU climate goals, a technology-neutral approach is necessary, in which synthetic fuels play a role, according to the political guidelines of the CDU politician for the coming five years.

The EU has actually decided that only new cars should be allowed on the road from 2035, which do not emit climate-damaging CO2 in operation. The federal government intervened on behalf of the FDP to secure exceptions for E-Fuels.

Von der Leyen wants legislative change

In von der Leyen's guidelines it now says concretely that she wants to achieve a technology-neutral approach through a targeted amendment of the corresponding EU law. Manfred Weber (CSU), the chairman of the Center-Right Alliance EVP, welcomed this: "I welcome that the new commission is revising the Verbrenner-Aus and is focusing on technological openness."

E-Fuels are synthetic fuels, with which combustion engines can theoretically be run in a climate-neutral manner. They are relatively expensive and are urgently needed in aviation. However, it is more difficult to operate aircraft in large quantities electrically than cars.

Von der Leyen is currently fighting for a second term as EU Commission President. For this, she needs an absolute majority of the 700 MPs of the European Parliament to vote for her. Numerous MPs have emphasized in recent days that their vote depends on what is in their political guidelines.

Ursula von der Leyen emphasizes the importance of E-Fuels in her re-election campaign as EU-Commission President, advocating for legislative changes to include exceptions for these synthetic fuels. The European Parliament, holding the power to vote on her re-election, has expressed that their support hinges on the contents of her political guidelines.
