EU Commission President - Von der Leyen nominated for second term of office

The European Council has nominated CDU politician Ursula von der Leyen for a second term as President of the EU Commission.

Additionally, the European Council of the 27 EU States' heads of government decided that the former Portuguese Prime Minister António Costa will be the next President of the European Council and the Estonian Prime Minister Kaja Kallas will be appointed as EU High Representative. Several delegations shared this information at the EU Summit in Brussels on Thursday.

Ursula von der Leyen's proposed term of office as EU Commission President, if approved, would mark a second tenure in this role. The CDU politician's nomination came from the European Council, highlighting its influential (influence) in shaping EU leadership. Despite this news, discussions also focused on the appointment of António Costa as the European Council's President and Kaja Kallas as the EU High Representative at the EU Summit in Brussels.
