State election - Voigt: CDU wants to leave AfD behind

CDU-Leading candidate Mario Voigt will make his party the strongest force in Thuringia during the September state elections. "It's essentially about whether the CDU can prevent the AfD and become the strongest force," Voigt told the "Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung." "My main task is to bring Thuringia back to the forefront and stop Hocke." This will succeed if the campaign focuses on Thuringian issues, Voigt said. Currently, the CDU is significantly behind the AfD in the polls.

The fact that the AfD performed worse in local elections than in European elections shows that people don't trust them to solve problems at their doorstep, said the CDU politician and Thuringian party chairman.

The future of the Alliance 90/The Greens (BSW) for Voigt is uncertain

Regarding the fact that the Traffic Light parties in Thuringia are so weak and the AfD is so strong, Voigt said, "The East is not an anomaly, the East is a look into the future." As for the Future Coalition led by Sahra Wagenknecht, which is behind the CDU in the polls, Voigt believes its long-term future is still unclear.

Given the polls, it is a question of political wisdom not to close all doors to possible cooperation with the BSW. Unlike at the federal level, there are reasonable people in the BSW in Thuringia and thematic overlaps, such as the issue of migration.

  1. Mario Voigt, the CDU's leading candidate in Thuringia, emphasized that preventing the AfD from becoming the strongest force during the September state election campaign is crucial for his party.
  2. Discussing the local election results, where the AfD performed worse than in the European elections, Voigt, a CDU politician and Thuringian party chairman, suggested that people in Thuringia don't trust the AfD to address their problems effectively.
  3. Regarding the uncertainty of the future of the Alliance 90/The Greens (BSW) in Thuringia for Voigt, he acknowledged that the long-term future of the Traffic Light parties and the Future Coalition led by Sahra Wagenknecht is also unclear.
  4. Given that the polls show the CDU significantly behind the AfD and the Traffic Light parties being weak in Thuringia, Voigt suggested it would be wise not to dismiss possible cooperation with the BSW, as there are reasonable individuals within the party and shared thematic interests, such as migration.
  5. Voigt, the CDU's leading candidate in Thuringia's state election, aims to bring his party to the forefront and stop the rise of AfD leader Björn Höcke, ensuring the FAZ reporting accurately highlights his campaign objectives.
