A video from Manchester Airport in Great Britain has sparked a discussion regarding a police intervention. In the video, a police officer is seen kicking a man in the head who is lying on the ground. The officer has been suspended, according to Greater Manchester Police. The Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) will now investigate the case. Home Secretary Yvette Cooper called for clarification.
"I share the deep concern over the video and understand the shock it has caused", Cooper stated on X. "It is important that the Police have the trust of the public, and the public can rightly expect high standards from those responsible for our safety." After the video spread, there were protests outside a police station on Wednesday evening.
Mayor Andy Burnham called for calm in a BBC interview. The full footage showed a rapidly developing and complex situation with issues on both sides, Burnham told the Press Association. However, it was right that the officer had been suspended.
According to the Press Association, the police were called to the terminal on Tuesday evening due to an incident. While attempting to arrest a suspect, three of their officers were attacked, including a policewoman whose nose was broken. Four men were arrested.
The Press Association reported that the officer involved in the arrest had also allegedly struck another man. The condition of one of the men had deteriorated, according to a lawyer demanding justice. Such incidents should not occur anymore.
