Video allegedly shows Russian war crime
According to Ukraine, a video circulating on the internet is evidence of a Russian war crime. It apparently shows two soldiers surrendering to enemy troops - and then being shot dead.
Following the emergence of a video on social media, Ukraine has accused Russia of committing a war crime. The unverified video shows a soldier coming out of a trench with his hands up and lying on the ground. A second soldier stumbles out and also lies down. The Russian troops then appear to open fire and the video ends.
"The video shows a group of people in Russian uniforms shooting at close range at two unarmed soldiers in the uniform of the Ukrainian Armed Forces who have surrendered," the Ukrainian Prosecutor General's Office said. The Russian Ministry of Defense did not respond to a request for comment from the Reuters news agency.
Russia denies having committed war crimes during its war in Ukraine. Ukraine, on the other hand, says that Russia regularly violates the rules of war. "The execution of people who surrender is a war crime," said Ukraine's commissioner for human rights, Dmytro Lubinets, in response to Telegram.
"Today, a video of the execution of Ukrainian soldiers who surrendered as prisoners by Russian soldiers has appeared on the Internet. This is another violation of the Geneva Conventions and a disregard for international humanitarian law," said Lubinets. A speaker of the Ukrainian parliament, Ruslan Stefanchuk, wrote on X: "Russia has once again proved that it is a terrorist country for which there are no laws and norms of international law."
According to Deepstate, a popular Ukrainian war blog that published the video clip, the footage was filmed near Stepove on the Avdiivka frontline in the Donetsk region. The Prosecutor General's Office stated that the incident took place in the Pokrovsk district, a large area in the Donetsk region, which is close to Avdiivka. Fierce fighting has been raging in Avdiivka for weeks.
