- Venue seeks fresh rowers for water excursions through the canals
The Iconic Gondoliers and Their Black Boats Rule Venice's Skyline: Every day, Venice's gondoliers, clad in striped shirts and straw hats, expertly steer their boats through the city's labyrinthine canals. Regrettably, it seems there aren't enough of these navigators in this northern Italian lagoon city. The Venice city administration is on a lookout for new gondoliers and has initiated a training program for this old-world profession.
However, joining this profession isn't a walk in the park. Licenses for gondolas are a rarity. As per local reports, only about 440 gondoliers own these coveted permits. Interestingly enough, these licenses are often inherited and passed down from generation to generation. Admission into the training is equally challenging.
English lessons and dealing with tourists
Until last Tuesday, individuals wanting to participate in this program could apply. As per the announcement, the program includes a theoretical and practical component, as well as a rowing test. The students learn the essentials of maritime law and Venice's art history. English lessons are also offered to help communicate with tourists. The course also educates participants on the correct way to engage with tourists.
The most crucial part of the 40-hour course is the practical segment, where seasoned gondoliers teach the characteristic back-rowing technique. Following this, there's a rigorous exam. Upon passing, participants receive a certificate that allows them to sit for an exam at Venice's Chamber of Commerce. Finishing this gives them a license to operate a gondola. Participants must foot the bill for the training, which costs around 800 euros.
Last year, the city government hiked the prices for gondola rides. A half-hour ride during the day costs 90 euros, and after 19.00, the price escalates to 110 euros. With an estimated 15 million visitors per year, Venice is one of the most-visited cities globally. In an attempt to manage the tourist swarms, the city experimented with a day-tripper tax during the summer months.
To effectively serve the numerous tourists in Venice, education and training are crucial for prospective gondoliers. The training program includes English lessons to facilitate communication with tourists, teaching the participants the correct etiquette and essentials of maritime law. Furthermore, the need for continued education and updates in this field is paramount to ensure gondoliers provide top-notch service to their clients.
