Caribbean storm - Vacation resorts in Mexico prepare for hurricane "Beryl"
On the Yucatan Peninsula in Mexico, tourists and locals are preparing for the arrival of Hurricane "Beryl." Over 380,000 tourists are currently reportedly still in popular vacation spots in the region such as Cancún and Tulum, according to authorities. After passing over Jamaica during the day, the hurricane is predicted to weaken and reach the eastern coast of the peninsula around Thursday evening local time, according to the US National Hurricane Center (NHC).
People are reportedly stocking up on water and supplies at supermarkets. Windows are being boarded up with wooden panels. Shelters are standing by, according to Laura Velázquez, the coordinator of the national civil defense. Schools in the state of Quintana Roo will close on Thursday and Friday. The ports are being closed - even for cruise ships.
Thousands of soldiers and policemen are on standby
According to the Mexican Meteorological Service, Hurricane "Beryl" is expected to make two landfalls on the Mexican coast within a few days. First, it is predicted to reach the Yucatan Peninsula on Thursday evening or early Friday local time as a Category 2 hurricane with sustained winds of up to 155 kilometers per hour between Tulum and Felipe Carrillo Puerto. Currently, "Beryl" is a Category 4 hurricane.
Later, "Beryl" is predicted to move over the peninsula and out to sea in the Gulf of Mexico. It is expected to make landfall again between the eastern states of Tamaulipas and Veracruz as a tropical storm on Monday night. However, it cannot be ruled out that it will then still be a Category 1 hurricane. In support of the population, the national civil defense reports that approximately 6,300 soldiers and policemen are ready. At least six people have died during Hurricane "Beryl's" passage through the southeastern Caribbean.
