USA: Further troop deployments in the Middle East possible
In view of the war in Gaza, the US government is not ruling out sending further military support to the region.
The situation will continue to be monitored, National Security Council Communications Director John Kirby told US broadcaster CNN on Tuesday. If additional changes had to be made to the strength, readiness or equipment of the military, this would be done.
The US military had already deployed hundreds of soldiers to the Middle East last week. Several warships and fighter planes were also sent to the eastern Mediterranean to deter regional actors.
Commenting on dozens of attacks on US forces stationed in Iraq and Syria by pro-Iranian militias, Kirby said: "We will of course do everything we need to do to protect our troops in Iraq and Syria." The attacks are very worrying. However, he added that we had not yet seen any actor make "demonstrable large muscle movements" to escalate the conflict.
Kirby also made it clear once again that the US government does not approve of a renewed occupation of the Gaza Strip by Israel. US President Joe Biden is still of the opinion that this is "not good for Israel". Kirby emphasized that the USA would continue to stand by Israel's side and ensure that the country receives everything it needs in the fight against the Islamist Hamas.
John Kirby expressed the US government's concerns over the attacks on American forces in Iraq and Syria by pro-Iranian militias, stating that they will take necessary measures to protect their troops. Regarding the conflicts in the Middle East, particularly the situation in Gaza, Kirby reiterated Joe Biden's stance that a renewed occupation of Gaza by Israel is not beneficial.
