US military plane crashes - five bodies found

Following the crash of a military aircraft off the Japanese island of Yakushima, several crew members' bodies have been found - but not all of them. The wreckage of the Osprey CV-22 has also been located by the emergency services. It is the second crash of a plane of this type within a few months.

During a large-scale search operation off the coast of Japan, rescue workers have found five bodies in the wreckage of a crashed US military aircraft. Diving teams from the USA and Japan have confirmed the discovery of five of the eight crew members, the US military said. According to the statement, the search teams located the bodies together with the main fuselage of the wrecked aircraft. Two of the five crew members found have already been recovered. The recovery work was ongoing.

The US military had previously announced that divers searching for the missing crew members had found mortal remains in the waters off southern Japan. These were discovered together with wreckage off the island of Yakushima. The identity of the dead has yet to be determined. Japanese broadcaster NHK reported that the front part of the plane, possibly including the cockpit, had apparently been found.

Not the first Osprey crash

The Osprey CV-22 aircraft crashed off Yakushima on Wednesday last week with eight people on board. The body of one crew member was recovered on the same day. Two other crew members are still missing.

In August, three US Marines died in the crash of an Osprey military aircraft in northern Australia; the cause of the accident was unclear. Last year, four US Marines died during a NATO maneuver in Norway when an Osprey crashed.
