US military in Europe raises alert level
In US military bases in Europe, the second highest alert level, "Charlie," has taken effect as of now. This alert is triggered when a potential terror threat is imminent. The source of the threat is still unclear.
The US Army has raised the threat level on several of its bases in Europe to the second highest warning level "Charlie," according to ABC News and CNN, citing unnamed officials. This alert level is applied when there are indications of a possible attack on personnel or army installations, the US Military stated on its website.
The highest alert level "Delta" will be called if a terror attack has occurred or is imminent. The Pentagon stated that due to a combination of factors that could impact the safety of US soldiers and their families in Europe, US Command Europe has doubled its efforts.
Indications of an Attack on US Bases
"There are credible reports indicating an attack on US bases in the coming week or so," Fox News quoted a defense official. The official told Fox News that this was not related to the parliamentary elections in France.
The US European Command (USEUCOM) based in Germany initially did not confirm the raised alert level and only stated: "We remain vigilant." The US State Department advises US citizens in Germany to exercise caution due to increased terror threats.
Several European countries, including France, have raised the highest terror alert level following an attack in March, where armed individuals killed over 140 people at a concert hall in a suburb of Moscow. The Djihadist militia Islamic State (IS) claimed responsibility for the attack. German Interior Minister Nancy Faeser of the SPD spoke of an "acute" terror threat in Germany after the attack in Moscow.
- The reasons for the heightened alert level in US military bases in Europe could potentially be linked to threats from the Islamic State, given their history of terrorist attacks.
- In light of the recent increase in terror threats in Europe, the US military is taking necessary precautions, such as raising the alert level in its bases, to protect against potential attacks from groups like the Islamic State.
- The US military's heightened alert level following credible threats is a reminder of the ongoing danger of terrorism, especially as demonstrated by the terrorist attacks in Moscow and Paris, claimed by the Islamic State.
