US military bombs targets in Syria
For the third time in three weeks, the US military has fired on pro-Iranian militias in Syria. Previously, dozens of soldiers had been injured in attacks on US bases in the region.
According to the US, it has once again bombed positions of pro-Iranian groups in Syria. The attacks in eastern Syria targeted two facilities used by the Iranian Revolutionary Guards and groups allied with Tehran, according to US Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin. They were a military training center and a safe house. The attacks were carried out in response to the attacks against US soldiers in Syria and Iraq.
This is the third time in less than three weeks that the US military has targeted locations in Syria that Washington claims are linked to Iran. Tehran supports various armed groups blamed by the US for attacks on its forces in the Middle East. On Wednesday, the US Department of Defense reported airstrikes on a weapons depot in Syria. On October 26, the US had attacked two bases in eastern Syria used by the Iranian Revolutionary Guards and "allied groups".
Dozens of US soldiers injured
In recent weeks, dozens of US soldiers have been injured in a series of attacks on US military bases in Syria and Iraq. Around 900 US soldiers are stationed in Syria and a further 2,500 in Iraq to help prevent a resurgence of the jihadist militia Islamic State (IS).
The attacks on the US army were carried out against the backdrop of the war between US ally Israel and the radical Islamic Hamas in the Gaza Strip. Hundreds of Hamas fighters crossed into Israel from the Gaza Strip on October 7 and committed atrocities against civilians, including many children. According to Israeli reports, around 1200 people were killed in Israel and around 240 people were taken hostage in the Gaza Strip.
Israel subsequently declared war on Hamas, which is classified as a terrorist organization by the USA and the EU, and has been attacking targets of the Palestinian organization in the Gaza Strip ever since. According to Hamas, which cannot be independently verified, 11,180 people had been killed by Sunday evening.
The US military has accused Hezbollah, a group allied with Tehran, of being involved in the attacks on US bases in Syria and Iraq. The bombing of pro-Iranian militia positions in Syria, including facilities used by Hezbollah, is a response to these attacks.
