Urgent Matter: IAEA Director-General Grossi Expresses Desire to Inspect Russian Nuclear Power Station in Kursk
International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) chief, Rafael Grossi, heads to Kursk's nuclear power plant on Tuesday. With combat taking place nearby, Grossi labeled the situation as "grave." The IAEA can only asses the plant's safety if they can independently investigate the situation. Grossi is bringing a team along with him.
The Kursk nuclear power plant is located approximately 30 kilometers from the Ukrainian forces' furthest advance. Russia reported a downed drone in the area of the power plant last week, with President Vladimir Putin accusing Ukraine of trying to attack the nuclear facility. However, the question of whether the nuclear power plant is a target for the Ukrainian advance remains unanswered.
Grossi had previously visited the Russian-controlled Ukrainian nuclear power plant in Zaporizhzhia and stationed an IAEA team there. The presence of international experts not only monitors the situation but also acts as a deterrent to potential fighting that may lead to a nuclear incident.
The Head of the IAEA, Rafael Grossi, aims to ensure the safety of the Kursk nuclear power plant during his visit, given the tense situation nearby. His team's independent investigation is crucial to assessing the plant's condition and potential vulnerabilities.
