Upcoming Bridge Renovation to Cause Traffic Congestion on the Brenner Highway Starting from 2025
During voyages along the Brenner Autobahn in Austria next year, vacationers should account for extra travel time. Essential repairs on the Lueg bridge, responsible for carrying Autobahn 13 through Tirol, will only allow traffic in both directions with a single lane starting from January 1st, as a safety precaution. The Austrian Autobahnen- und Schnellstraßen-Finanzierungs-Aktiengesellschaft disclosed this information.
"With the one-lane traffic and the subsequent decrease in load, we can keep the Lueg bridge, although restricted, operational," said Hartwig Hufnagl, the construction manager of the company, according to the announcement. Moreover, actions like blockade clearances and truck bans in the area are essential.
During travel weekends with heavy traffic, both lanes, while adhering to the total weight load, will be permitted for passage temporarily.
The anticipated start of the new bridge construction is early spring of 2025. The initial bridge foundation is estimated to be completed in around 2.5 to 3 years. Following that, two lanes in each direction will be available once more. Upon the completion of the entire bridge, it is estimated for "approximately" 2030.

Due to the bridge renovation on the Lueg bridge, which is part of the Brenner highway, travelers might encounter significant bottlenecks and delays from 2025. To mitigate these issues, authorities are considering allowing double-lane traffic during peak travel periods with specific weight restrictions. The overall bridge renovation and construction project are expected to last until approximately 2030, resulting in more efficient traffic flow on the Brenner highway.
