Unweather transforms Bavarian places into winter landscapes

In the summer, spacecraft in Bavaria need to be moved - even snow shovels were taken out: A storm caused a wintry scene in some parts of the Free State. Hailstones whitened the roads. In western Germany, a tornado devastated a business area.

A storm caused flooded basements, overflowed streets, and traffic disruptions due to fallen trees in parts of Oberbayern and Schwaben. Due to heavy hail showers, even spacecraft and snow shovels were deployed. As a police spokesperson in Kempten stated, the streets were partially white with hailstones.

There were approximately 700 interventions by police and emergency services in Schwaben on Friday evening. The focus was in the areas of Ost- and Oberallgäu, as well as the western part of the Landkreis Lindau. The police spoke of "flood-like rain events." The follow-up interventions, such as pumping out basements, lasted until the night.

Hail caused traffic to come to a standstill on the A7 between Oy-Mittelberg and Kempten and on the B12 between Kempten and Marktoberdorf. No injuries were reported by the police. By morning, all roads were clear and the water had receded.

Tornado sweeps through Telgte

In Oberbayern, there were around 230 interventions due to the storm in the entire area of the Oberbayern Sud Police Presidium between 7 pm and midnight on Friday, according to a spokesperson in Rosenheim. However, there were no major incidents reported. The main issues were flooded basements and trees falling on roads and, in some cases, train tracks. There were no significant disruptions to rail traffic, according to a spokeswoman for the German Railways. The tracks were quickly cleared. No injuries were reported.

In Munich, the Klassik-Open-Air concert at the Odeonsplatz was paused due to an approaching heavy thunderstorm. Thousands of concertgoers had to leave after certain passages from Richard Wagner's Walküre.

A violent storm caused significant damage in western Germany as well. Telgte, east of Munster in North Rhine-Westphalia, was particularly affected by a tornado. A container company's business manager was quoted by the WDR. "My employees called me just before 4 pm and said that a tornado had passed through here." The Tornadoliste.de weather site classified the storm as a tornado. Damage was reported in and around Telgte in the Warendorf district near Munster, according to the platform X. "Kachelmannwetter" also reported a tornado.

In the international arena of Meteorology, extreme weather events like the one in Bavaria are becoming more frequent. Despite being located in southern Germany, Bavaria experienced a severe storm that brought hail the size of snowballs, causing disruptions in western parts of the state. The extreme weather conditions led to a tornado in Telgte, East of Munster in North Rhine-Westphalia, causing significant damage to a container company.
