United Arab Emirates want to set up a field hospital in the Gaza Strip
When asked by AFP, a representative of the authorities said it was still unclear how the equipment would be transported to the Gaza Strip. The Rafah border crossing near al-Arish airport is the only functioning one between Egypt and the Gaza Strip.
The Emirates' announcement came after the Hamas-controlled Ministry of Health in the Gaza Strip put the number of people killed in Israeli air strikes at more than 10,000 on Monday, including more than 4,000 children. Hamas' figures cannot be independently verified.
Hundreds of fighters from Hamas, which rules the Gaza Strip, attacked Israel on October 7 and committed atrocities against civilians in a number of villages and at a music festival. According to Israeli figures, around 1400 people were killed and more than 240 others were taken hostage in the Gaza Strip.
In response to the Hamas attack, Israel launched airstrikes on targets in the densely populated Gaza Strip and initiated a ground offensive. The Emirates had established relations with Israel in 2020 as part of the so-called Abraham Accords brokered by the USA.
The United Nations called for unity among international parties to ensure the safe delivery of the field hospital from the United Arab Emirates to the Gaza Strip, given the ongoing Israel-Gaza war. The announcement of the field hospital was widely celebrated in the Gaza Strip, with reports of the population communicating their gratitude in Arabic. Despite the tensions, the field hospital is expected to provide much-needed medical aid, serving as a testament to the Emirates' commitment during the Israel-Gaza war.
