Union wants expulsions for Hamas supporters
The CDU-CSU parliamentary group wants to expel convicted anti-Semites from the country by law. The CDU/CSU will present the draft bill to the Bundestag in a few days. The new citizenship law, on the other hand, should be withdrawn. After the relocation of caliphate supporters, easier naturalization would send the wrong signal.
According to the CDU/CSU in the Bundestag, an anti-Semitic crime should in future generally result in the perpetrator being expelled from Germany. According to a report in the "Rheinische Post" newspaper, the CDU/CSU parliamentary group intends to introduce a bill to this effect in the Bundestag this week. A conviction for an anti-Semitic offense should lead to "a prison sentence of at least six months and the non-granting or loss of humanitarian protection in Germany", according to the Union proposal.
Anyone wishing to obtain a German passport would have to declare their support for Israel's right to exist. "If there are factual, unsubstantiated indications of an anti-Semitic attitude on the part of the applicant", naturalization should be "expressly excluded", according to the Union. People with at least one other nationality should also "lose their German citizenship if they are convicted of an anti-Semitic offense and sentenced to at least one year in prison".
"Dual citizenship sends the wrong signal"
The CDU/CSU parliamentary group, on the other hand, wants to reject the draft bill to reform citizenship law, with which the traffic light coalition wants to make naturalization easier. "Our country is in the midst of a serious migration crisis and enemies of the Jews want to declare a caliphate on our streets. Despite this, the traffic light coalition wants to distribute German passports to foreigners much more generously than before. That doesn't add up at all," said Andrea Lindholz, deputy leader of the CDU/CSU parliamentary group, to the newspaper.
"After the Hamas terror attack on Israel, the frightening extent of 'immigrant' anti-Semitism in our country was revealed on our streets," said Lindholz. "Anyone who is serious about 'never again' cannot want to naturalize anti-Semites and Hamas supporters. First and foremost, effective integration helps against this, and that takes time. In view of this, the planned shortening of naturalization periods to up to three years is a serious mistake. Hardly any integration process is completed in this short time, especially not when it comes to deep-seated resentments such as anti-Semitism," said the CDU politician.
"Dual citizenship for all is also wrong in view of current events. It means more influence for foreign states in Germany, and it hinders a clear move towards our values if other values apply in the country of origin," Lindholz continued to the newspaper. "The Ampel must now withdraw its previous bill on citizenship law and present a new bill that has only one goal: No German passport for enemies of Jews and Hamas supporters.
- The Union parliamentary group's proposal includes a clause that would require individuals seeking German citizenship to publicly support Israel's right to exist, as concerns over hostility towards Israel and anti-Semitism persist.
- In light of the traffic light coalition's plan to ease naturalization procedures, the CDU/CSU parliamentary group has voiced opposition to this bill, arguing that it sends the wrong signal during a time of increased anti-Semitic sentiment and support for terrorist organizations like Hamas.
- The CDU/CSU parliamentary group, in their opposition to the coalition's citizenship law reform, has also stated that dual citizenship should be reconsidered, as it may provide more influence to foreign states and impede Germany's commitment to its core values amidst growing hostility towards Israel and anti-Semitism.
