UN: Two water suppliers in the Gaza Strip stop working
According to the UN, two water suppliers in the south of the Gaza Strip have stopped working due to a lack of fuel. As a result, 200,000 people are no longer receiving drinking water, the UN emergency aid office OCHA reported on Tuesday, citing the UN Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA). According to the report, the relief organization does not know how it will be able to maintain its humanitarian support for hundreds of thousands in the second half of the week. The last fuel supplies have practically been used up. This means that the distribution of relief supplies coming from Egypt via the Rafah border crossing is also in question.
Almost 1.6 of the approximately 2.3 million inhabitants of the sealed-off Gaza Strip have been displaced since the start of the Israeli attacks on October 7. According to the report, around half of the internally displaced persons are staying in UNRWA facilities and have so far been provided with basic necessities there. Israel's attacks were in response to the massive terrorist attack by Islamist Hamas in southern Israel, which left around 1,200 people dead. The terrorists also kidnapped around 240 people in the Gaza Strip.
- The cessation of work by two water suppliers in the Gaza Strip, as mentioned by the UN, has exacerbated human rights issues, as over 200,000 individuals in the area are now deprived of their basic right to clean drinking water.
- The ongoing conflicts in the Middle East, such as the Gaza war, have led to numerous challenges, with the recent halt of water supply being one of the significant concerns, which the UN and organizations like OCHA and UNRWA are attempting to address.
- The UN and UNRWA are currently grappling with the impact of the Gaza war on the health and well-being of the inhabitants of the Gaza Strip, as the lack of functioning water suppliers threatens to compromise already fragile public health conditions in the area.
- The United Nations (UN) has been closely monitoring the deteriorating situation in the Gaza Strip, including the recent disruption of water supply, and has called for international aid and diplomatic interventions to ensure that the human rights of the conflict-affected populations in the region are upheld and protected.
