UN human rights experts call for release of more political prisoners in Russia
UN Human Rights Experts demand freedom for hundreds more political prisoners after prisoner exchange between Russia and Western states. Between 700 and 1,372 people are still being held in Russia on false or politically motivated charges, according to a joint statement by experts working for the UN Human Rights Council in Geneva.
The experts welcomed the release of 16 people, including journalists, artists, opposition figures, and activists who had been imprisoned for their activities. In exchange, ten people were handed over to Russia, including a convicted murderer and spies.
"The Russian government must immediately release all remaining political prisoners unconditionally," the UN human rights experts demanded, who monitor the situation in Russia, the rights of human rights activists, and the right to assembly.
The UN human rights experts hope for the implementation of the freedom of movement for all political prisoners still detained in Russia. Following the release of some prisoners, it's crucial that the freedom of movement is extended to the remaining individuals held on false or politically motivated charges.
