UN: Armed conflict in Sudan spreads to other regions of the country

The armed conflict in Sudan, which has left thousands dead and millions displaced, is spreading to other regions of the country, according to the United Nations. "The fighting has spread to new areas (...), putting even more civilians and humanitarian operations at risk," said the UN Assistant Secretary-General for Africa, Ghanaian diplomat Martha Ama Akyaa Pobee, to the Security Council. She named several federal states in the south of the country.

Pobee spoke of a poor humanitarian situation and a "catastrophic human rights crisis". According to reports, the warring parties had carried out indiscriminate attacks, but also targeted attacks against civilians, she continued. This is an obvious violation of international humanitarian law.

In Sudan, the troops of military ruler Abdel Fattah al-Burhan and the RSF militia of his former deputy Mohamed Hamdan Daglo have been engaged in a bloody power struggle since mid-April. More than 9,000 people have since been killed and seven million displaced.

At the end of October, the parties to the conflict resumed peace negotiations in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, but the fighting has intensified, according to the UN representative.

The spread of the armed conflict in Sudan, as noted by the UN, has resulted in a human rights crisis in several federal states in the south of the country. This crisis, marked by indiscriminate and targeted attacks on civilians, is a clear violation of international humanitarian law. The United Nations continues to express concern over the intensifying conflict, despite the resumption of peace negotiations in Jeddah.
