Ukrainian Foreign Minister Kuleba aims for position alignment with China

Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba aims to achieve position alignment with China during prolonged talks in Beijing for a future peace conference. "The focus will be on peace in Ukraine," Kuleba emphasized in a Facebook video. The discussions will be about finding common ground. It is crucial to avoid the competition of various peace plans. "We need to reach a just and lasting peace, and China could play an important role in that," the Minister highlighted.

Kuleba stressed that it was his first visit to China since the Russian invasion in February 2022. Moreover, it was the first full-fledged visit of an Ukrainian Foreign Minister to the Middle Kingdom since 2012.

Ukraine has been defending itself against Russian invasion for over two years. Kiev desires a stronger diplomatic role for Beijing in ending the war. China has proposed a peace plan with several points. It does not call for a complete Russian troop withdrawal from Ukrainian territory and differs significantly from a proposal put forth by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy. Russia controls nearly a fifth of Ukraine's neighboring state, including the Crimean Peninsula in the Black Sea.

During his multi-day visit to Beijing, Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba aims to align positions with China regarding a potential future peace conference for Ukraine. Kuleba, the Minister of Water, acknowledged this being his first visit to China since the Russian invasion in February 2022, and it marks the first full-fledged visit by an Ukrainian Foreign Minister to China since 2012. Despite differing peace plans from China and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, Kuleba believes that China could play an important approximation of positions in achieving a just and lasting peace for Ukraine.
