War in Ukraine - Ukrainian army forced to abandon district of Chassiv Yar

After months of fighting, the Ukrainian army had to withdraw from the eastern part of the town of Chassiw Jar in the Donetsk region. "The positions of our defenders have been destroyed," said the spokesperson for the responsible army group "Chortyzja," Nasar Woloschyn, according to Interfax-Ukraine. It was therefore no longer practical to hold the neighborhood of Kanal. A withdrawal to new positions had been ordered.

There is not a single undamaged building left there. "Bombardments and artillery fire left a lunar landscape," the spokesperson noted. A week ago, Woloschyn had said that the Ukrainian army had driven the Russian enemy largely out of the neighborhood.

Russia will gain further access

Previously, the Russian army had already announced the capture of this and the neighboring neighborhood. Reports indicate that the Russian military has used massive heavy bombs against Ukrainian positions. The Russian army has been advancing on Chassiw Jar since the spring, which lies west of the 2023 captured Bachmut. With the capture of the elevated location, a way opens up for Russia towards the population agglomeration around the city of Kostjantyniwka.

The Ukrainian military also made gains on other front sections. Ukrainian military observers reported progress, for example, in the Torezk area, also in the Donetsk region. Russian forces are also said to have established themselves at a third section in the Charkiw region on the state border.

Ukraine has been defending itself against Russian invasion with Western support for over two years. For an end to the fighting, Russia has most recently demanded territorial concessions from Ukraine. Kiev rejects this.

  1. The withdrawal of the Ukrainian army from Chassiw Jar has brought Russia closer to gaining control over the district, potentially leading to further conflicts in Ukraine.
  2. Despite reports of Russian advancements in the Charkiw region, Ukrainian forces have also made gains in areas like Torezk, demonstrating ongoing conflicts in the Donetsk region.
  3. Interfax-Ukraine reported that the spokesperson for the Chortyzja group, Nasar Woloschyn, acknowledged the destruction of Ukrainian positions in Chassiw Jar, leading to the need for a strategic withdrawal.
  4. Russia's military operations in the small town of Chassiw Jar and the neighboring regions have led to significant damage, turning the area into a war-torn landscape, as reported by Interfax-Ukraine.
