Ukraine reports missile attack on Russian shipyard near Kerch

According to Ukraine, it has attacked a shipyard not far from the strategically important Crimean bridge. According to the Ukrainian armed forces, naval and port facilities were hit during the attack on the Saliv plant in the city of Kerch at the eastern end of Russian-occupied Crimea in the evening.

The Russian occupying governor of Crimea, Sergei Aksyonov, announced on Telegram that Russian air defenses in the Kerch area had been activated and had intercepted missiles over the peninsula. Debris from a missile then fell onto a dry dock. There were no casualties. The information cannot be independently verified. Pro-Ukrainian bloggers claimed that the Russian corvette "Askold" was hit during the attack. The Karakurt-class missile ship was launched in 2021 and is equipped with Kalibr cruise missiles.

The Russian Black Sea Fleet stationed in Crimea has recently suffered several setbacks. In mid-September, the submarine "Rostov-on-Don" and the landing ship "Minsk" were severely damaged in an attack on the port of Sevastopol. A few days later, missiles hit the headquarters of the Black Sea Fleet . At the beginning of August, Ukraine reported damage to the landing ship"Olenegorski Gornjak" by a naval drone.

Russia occupied Crimea in 2014 and annexed it in violation of international law. Kiev has repeatedly emphasized that it wants to liberate the peninsula. The bridge near Kerch, which was opened by Kremlin leader Vladimir Putin in 2018, is an important supply route for Russian forces in southern Ukraine. At the end of October 2022, an explosion brought traffic on the bridge to a standstill for several months. This was later followed by attacks using naval drones and missiles.

Ukraine allegedly targeted naval and port facilities at the Saliv plant in Kerch, a city in Russian-occupied Crimea, claiming an attack on a shipyard near the strategically important Crimean bridge. The Russian corvette "Askold," launched in 2021, was reportedly damaged during this attack, as per pro-Ukrainian bloggers.

Despite Russia's claim of intercepting missiles and no casualties, Ukraine's attack on the shipyard comes amidst increased tensions, following previous incidents such as the damage to the "Rostov-on-Don" submarine and "Minsk" landing ship in the port of Sevastopol, as well as missile strikes on the headquarters of the Black Sea Fleet and the "Olenegorski Gornjak" landing ship.
