Ukraine refugees have an above-average level of education
Around one million Ukrainians have come to Germany since the start of the war and stayed. According to the Federal Statistical Office, almost half of the refugees have an academic degree. However, the employment rate depends on the length of stay.
The Ukrainians who have fled to Germany since the Russian attack are better educated than average. According to the Federal Statistical Office, Germany has recorded a net immigration of around 1.0 million people from Ukraine since the outbreak of the war up to the first half of 2023. "The high proportion of academic qualifications among immigrants from Ukraine is remarkable," it said.
According to the study, 45 percent of 25 to 59-year-olds had an academic professional qualification from a university or university of applied sciences, while 28 percent had a non-academic professional qualification. By comparison, only 27% of this age group in the German population as a whole have an academic degree. "Despite a high level of education, only one in five people aged 25 to 59 who immigrated from Ukraine was employed," it also said.
Of the men and women in the main employment phase, only 19 percent were working. By comparison, the employment rate in the population as a whole is more than four times as high in this age group at 85 percent. At 14%, the employment rate for women immigrants from Ukraine was significantly lower than that of men at 30%. Taking up employment is particularly difficult for mothers with small children.
According to studies, the employment rate of immigrants from Ukraine increases significantly after a stay of twelve months in Germany, as the Institute for Employment Research found out. Four out of ten Ukrainians were either single parents or children of single parents after their arrival in Germany. Russia invaded Ukraine on February 24, 2022. There is currently no end to the war in sight.
