Ukrainian cyber attack - Ukraine mounts attack on Russian online banking
Computer experts of the Ukrainian Military Intelligence Service reportedly disrupted Russian banking systems, mobile phone, and internet providers for at least a short time. The attack allegedly occurred on Tuesday morning, several Ukrainian media reported, citing intelligence sources. Russian customers reportedly could not access their Online banking for hours or make payments with their cards.
Customers saw messages on their bank apps stating that there was a system failure. The disruptions were supposed to be resolved soon. The services were functioning again on Wednesday.
Ukrainian intelligence services regularly claim successful online attacks on Russian resources. However, they have not yet managed to pull off a notable attack like the one on the Ukrainian mobile operator Kyivstar in December of the previous year. At that time, its services were completely paralyzed for days.
Ukraine has been defending itself against Russian invasion for over two years.
- The disruption to Russian banking systems was believed to be a result of military intelligence operations, specifically from Ukraine.
- Some speculate that the cyber attack on Russia's banking and internet providers was a retaliation for the ongoing conflicts between Russia and Ukraine, particularly in Ukraine's capital, Kiev.
- Despite the alleged cyber attack on Russian online banking systems, Russia has yet to publicly acknowledge or respond to these claims.
- The use of cyber attacks as a tactic in conflicts between nations, such as Ukraine and Russia, raises concerns about the safety and security of digital infrastructure worldwide.
