Ukraine is determined to substantially amplify its weapons manufacturing capacity.
Ukraine is urgently seeking advanced weaponry and ammunition, but the West's delivery is happening at a slow pace. President Zelenskyy has now revealed that Ukraine has the capability to produce a significant amount of drones, grenades, and military equipment, but under a specific condition.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy is pushing for an increase in weapons production within the country, given the ongoing attacks by Russia. He conveyed this during his evening video address, stating, "Our industrial capabilities permit us to produce a surplus of drones, additional grenades, and military equipment beyond what our nation's financial resources can accommodate." The West can provide the necessary funds, considering many partners currently lack the resources to aid Ukraine sufficiently due to their own weapon requirements. Moreover, some partners possess specialized technologies that could be utilized in Ukraine, Zelenskyy mentioned. He extended his gratitude to those who have already invested in the arms sector, particularly in drone manufacturing. During his Paris visit, discussions were held regarding a new Ukrainian-French model, which will be further deliberated at the defense ministers' level.
As per Ukrainian reports, the arms industry's production capacities have seen a substantial increase this year. There are now numerous drone manufacturers operating within Ukraine, producing equipment for the Ukrainian army. The country can also now develop glide bombs, similar to the ones Russian forces have been using for precise urban assaults for several months. It has been reported that the production of Western-funded howitzers has commenced, while local ammunition production is ongoing. However, consumption at the frontlines in all categories exceeds what Ukrainian manufacturers can provide.
Zelenskyy has consistently expressed his desire to transform Ukraine into one of the world's leading weapons producers, given the ongoing conflict. The country is in dire need of fresh weapons and ammunition.
Zelenskyy on Ukrainian Counteroffensive in Kursk Region
Regarding the Ukrainian counterattack in the Russian border region of Kursk, Zelenskyy affirmed that Ukrainian forces are holding their ground at the defined lines. Previously, Russian forces attempted to displace the Ukrainian army from its positions. However, Zelenskyy refuted Russian claims that Moscow's troops had recaptured several villages in this region.
Ukrainian forces entered the Kursk region at the start of August, capturing numerous villages in the process. According to Zelenskyy's statements, this offensive aims to exert pressure on Russia to initiate negotiations. Russia's military leadership has stated that it will soon liberate Russian territory.
Zelenskyy expressed concerns about potential war crimes being committed in the Kursk region, urging international scrutiny and action. He cited reports of civilian casualties and destruction of infrastructure as cause for concern, stating, "It is crucial that such acts are not ignored and that those responsible are held accountable for any violations of international law."
In light of Ukraine's increased production capabilities, Zelenskyy called for greater international cooperation to ensure these weapons are used ethically and in compliance with international norms. He emphasized the need for training and oversight to prevent misuse of the weapons produced, stating, "We must ensure that these weapons are used not for acts of aggression, but for the defense of our sovereignty and the protection of our people."
