Ukraine drives trucks on trains to Poland
The war is the latest example of the creative potential of many Ukrainians. Now they are also finding a way around the weeks-long truck blockade by Polish truckers - or rather: to get around it.
Due to the blockade of Polish haulage companies on the border with Ukraine, Kiev has started to bring trucks into the neighboring country by train. The Ukrainian railroad company declared that it had "sent the first train with trucks to Poland". The trucks were to be unloaded in Poland and continue their journey by road.
"Similar trips will be organized in the opposite direction," explained the Ukrainian railroad company. The state-owned company also published a video showing a train loaded with more than a dozen trucks.
Polish transport companies have been blocking several important border crossings with Ukraine since the beginning of November. Freight forwarders are complaining of "unfair competition" from Ukrainian companies after the EU suspended a number of conditions for border transport due to the Russian attack on Ukraine.
Freight traffic has therefore largely come to a standstill. According to the Ukrainian authorities, around 3,000 trucks are currently blocked at the border. Aid supplies are also no longer reaching Ukraine due to the blockade.
On Monday night, the Dolhobyczow-Uhryniw crossing was then opened for empty vehicles. The government in Kiev declared that this was a first step towards resolving the conflict. Previously, at least two rounds of negotiations between Kiev, Warsaw and the truck drivers had failed. The EU Commission accuses the Polish government of not doing enough to find a solution.
