Ukraine covers Crimea with combat drones
Ukraine has launched a drone attack on the Crimean peninsula annexed by Russia and the Kerch Bridge has been closed. Statements from Kiev and Moscow about the damage contradict each other. While the Kremlin claims to have repelled the attack, the opponent of the war claims to have hit objects.
Ukraine has attacked Russia's annexed Black Sea peninsula of Crimea with several dozen combat drones. The Russian military in Moscow officially announced that the wave of attacks had been repelled. In contrast, Ukrainian media reported, citing intelligence sources, that a number of militarily important objects in Crimea had been hit. These included an oil depot in the port city of Feodossiya, from which Russian troops are supplied, the Unian agency reported.
In the east of Crimea near Kerch, a Russian air defense radar was destroyed. A parking area for Russian helicopters, another radar and a missile guidance system were hit near Strelkovo in the north of the peninsula. It was not initially possible to verify the information provided by either side.
However, residents of Crimea reported the sound of explosions, according to the media. In the meantime, the 19-kilometre-long Kerch Bridge was closed during the night. It connects Crimea, which was annexed under international law in 2014, and the Russian mainland. The Russian Ministry of Defense announced that 26 unmanned Ukrainian missiles had been destroyed. A further 15 drones were intercepted over the Sea of Azov and Crimea. In terms of the number of drones, this would be the largest such attack by Ukraine since the summer.
Russia has been waging a war of aggression against neighboring Ukraine for more than 21 months. In its defensive campaign against the Russian invasion, Ukraine has repeatedly shelled Russian territory - both in the border region and in the hinterland. However, the number of casualties and damage are disproportionate to the serious consequences of the war in Ukraine. Ukraine also reported Russian drone attacks on various parts of the country. According to the Ukrainian air force, 10 of a total of 17 Russian combat drones were intercepted. Russia also fired six missiles from the S-300 anti-aircraft system at the neighboring country during the night.
