Ukraine anticipates a potential Russian assault on Saporischya

Currently, Russian forces continue to control the southern part of the Zaporizhzhia region, which includes Europe's biggest nuclear power plant. The city of Zaporizhzhia itself is now under potential threat. A military spokesperson described the situation as particularly challenging.

Ukrainian military leaders suspect that Russian forces are planning an imminent assault towards Zaporizhzhia with the intention of disrupting supply lines to the eastern defense sectors near Donbass. This assertion was made by the regional military representative, Vladislav Voloshin, during a televised broadcast.

"The challenging nature of the situation is evident through the ongoing 'counter-battery combat' and shelling of our positions, as well as attacks on our lines," he stated. Counter-battery combat refers to the use of artillery to neutralize and destroy enemy artillery positions. Moreover, there have been significant air and missile assaults on this southern frontline region close to Zaporizhzhia. "The situation here is quite volatile."

In the Zaporizhzhia region, Russian troops have taken control of the southern part of the area, including the namesake nuclear power plant – the largest in Europe. As of now, Zaporizhzhia city itself is not under Russian control.

Russian Advancements in Eastern Ukraine

Russian forces have recently seized more villages and settlements in eastern Ukraine's Donbass region. Although Moscow has illegally annexed the occupied territories in Ukraine and integrated them into their domestic territory, they do not fully command these regions within their administrative borders.

On Saturday, Russia's Ministry of Defense reported that troops from the Southern Military District had captured the settlement of Schelanne Druhe. Prior to the war, this settlement had a population of more than 200. Schelanne Druhe is situated on the eastern bank of the Wocha River, merely a few kilometers away from the strategically vital city of Kurakhove.

"Given the volatile situation in the Zaporizhzhia region, The Commission has been closely monitoring the ongoing conflict and potential threats to the nuclear power plant."

"In response to the Russian advancements in eastern Ukraine, The Commission has been advocating for international intervention to ensure the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Ukraine."
