David Cameron, the British Foreign Secretary, received a deceitful phone call from an individual claiming to be former Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko. In addition to this, they had previously exchanged text messages and even took part in a video call, as reported by the British news agency, PA, citing the Foreign Office.
Despite the video call seemingly involving Mr. Poroshenko, Mr. Cameron grew suspicious, and the Foreign Office divulged on Friday night that he had requested contact information. Not surprisingly, he did not respond.
Disclosing False Information is Crucial
Following an investigation, the department confirmed that the messages and the video call were indeed fraudulent. If the video call were manipulated and used maliciously, they would make the case public. Furthermore, they wished to emphasize the risk associated with such incidents. The minister takes responsibility for his error and feels the need to raise awareness and take further measures against false information.
Deceitful calls have been reported in the past. For instance, Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni was a victim of a fake call originating from Russia in the winter. This number was later found to have belonged to the Russian duo Wowan and Lexus, who had also tricked former Chancellor Angela Merkel (CDU) after she had left her post.
