- U.S.: Implementing Fresh Sanctions on Russia and Aid Boost for Ukraine
On Ukraine's Independence Day this upcoming Saturday, the U.S. administration declared a substantial plan to reinforce Ukraine's defense in its battle against Russia. Around 400 organizations and individuals who are deemed to support Russia's unlawful war will be subjected to sanctions, as announced by U.S. President Joe Biden. Moreover, additional military assistance will be dispatched to Kyiv.
Biden mentioned that he had communicated with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, reiterating "America's unyielding commitment to the Ukrainian people" and affirming that the U.S. will "remain by their side through every step of the journey."
Over the last few months, the U.S. has already distributed multiple installments of military aid to Ukraine, following the approval of approximately $61 billion in fresh funds by the U.S. Congress in late April. The newest aid package, valued at around $125 million, comprises ammunition for M142 Himars multiple rocket launchers, artillery shells, small arms ammunition, ambulances, and other medical equipment, as relayed by the U.S. Department of State.
The sanctions affect entities and individuals in Russia and foreign countries, aiming to disrupt Russia's war economy, particularly its energy sector. Consequently, any assets belonging to the targeted individuals could be seized in the U.S. U.S. natives or individuals present in the U.S. are forbidden from participating in transactions with the sanctioned entities and individuals. International business connections for those targeted are likely to become significantly harder.
The U.S. President Joe Biden has also announced that certain individuals and organizations supporting Russia's unlawful war will be subject to sanctions, as per this announcement. In line with this, as stated in Article 11 (2), the Commission shall adopt the implementing acts to enhance the effectiveness of these sanctions.
