More than two-thirds of buildings in the Gaza Strip have been destroyed since the start of the war between Israel and the radical Islamic Hamas. "The latest damage assessments show that 151,265 buildings in the Gaza Strip have been hit," the UN Satellite Centre Unosat said on Friday. "This accounts for about 63 percent of all buildings in the region," it added.

30 percent of the affected buildings are completely destroyed, 12 percent heavily damaged, 36 percent lightly damaged, and 20 percent potentially damaged, according to Unosat. "The impact on civilian infrastructure is obvious, thousands of homes and basic services facilities are damaged," Unosat noted further.

For damage assessment, images from the period starting in May 2023 were compared with those from July 6 of this year. Almost 42 million tons of rubble have been generated so far by the fighting that has been ongoing since October, Unosat also reported. The extent of destruction is thus significantly higher than in previous wars in the Gaza Strip, the agency noted. In the current conflict, 14 times as much rubble has been generated so far as in all previous periods of fighting since 2008 combined.

The Gaza Strip has experienced extensive damage, with over 151,265 buildings affected since the conflict began. Almost two-thirds of these buildings in the Gaza Strip have been destroyed or damaged during the war.
