Two arrests after fatal attack in Berlin subway station

In June, a 26-year-old man was found stabbed to death at a Berlin U-Bahn station. Two suspects have been arrested by the police. One of the suspects was apprehended during a police control, the other in his apartment.

According to a statement from the Berlin Police and the Prosecutor's Office, two men, aged 18 and 23, were arrested. They were reportedly presented before an investigating judge and are currently in remand prison.

On June 22, a 26-year-old man was found dead with stab wounds on the platform of the U-Bahn station Kottbusser Tor in the Berlin district of Kreuzberg. According to the investigation, he was attacked by a group of people on the train platform and mortally wounded. The station was temporarily closed to passengers and train traffic.

A murder commission of the State Criminal Police and the Prosecutor's Office took over the investigation. The two suspects were reportedly sought by the police and prosecutor's office and arrested independently of each other.

The 23-year-old was arrested during a police control at Hermannplatz in the early hours of Sunday night; the 18-year-old was arrested in his apartment in the Wedding district. The investigation is ongoing.

Kottbusser Tor has been known for decades as a popular nightlife destination - but also infamous for street crime and drug dealing. In February 2023, a new police station was set up in the first floor of a building directly above the street. The location is controversial, with left-wing and left-radical groups having protested. According to Interior Senator Iris Spranger of the SPD, there are positive reports from shopkeepers and residents.

The murder and manslaughter case at the U-Bahn station in Berlin has gained international attention. The investigation into the stabbing death of the 26-year-old man at the Kottbusser Tor subway station is being handled by a joint murder commission from the State Criminal Police and the Prosecutor's Office.
