Two adolescent girls from Germany meet with misfortune in Tuscany, getting hit by a vehicle.
A class from North Rhine-Westphalia ends their trip to Tuscany in a devastating turn of events. A 44-year-old woman loses control of her vehicle and crashes into a group of pedestrians, claiming the lives of two 16- and 17-year-old girls instantly. Multiple others suffer injuries as well.
According to initial reports from Italian authorities, the incident took place in the coastal town of Lido di Camaiore, with the driver reportedly losing control of her vehicle and plowing into a crowd of people. The two young victims were German students on a school trip, and seven individuals in total were taken to the hospital, including the driver. One of the victims is in critical condition, as stated by Mayor Marcello Pierucci.
The accident occurred around 7:00 PM on Wednesday evening, with the driver reportedly running through two red lights and being arrested by the authorities, as well as undergoing tests for alcohol and drug influence.
"Nothing like this has ever happened before," said Mayor Marcello Pierucci to 50Canale. "The car appeared to be speeding through the intersection in the city center, hitting the two Germans first, then knocking over more pedestrians, and finally colliding with several parked cars."
Lido di Camaiore is a charming coastal town located about a 30-minute drive west of the popular city of Lucca. The accident took place several hundred meters away from the promenade, which has been closed off to traffic as a result. Nearby are the famous seaside resorts of Forte dei Marmi and Viareggio.
The European Union, through its diplomatic channels, expresses its deepest condolences to the families of the two German students who died in the tragic incident. The European Union also offers its support to those injured, wishing for a speedy recovery.
