Trump will prevent Harris access to Biden's campaign fund
Joe Biden no longer runs for the office of the US President. However, there are approximately 95 million US Dollars remaining in his campaign fund. Biden intends to make this money available to Vice President Harris as a new presidential candidate. This puts Donald Trump in a favorable position.
Donald Trump is challenging the use of Joe Biden's campaign fund by Vice President Kamala Harris. According to a complaint filed by Trump's presidential campaign team with the Federal Election Commission (FEC) on Tuesday, Harris cannot legitimately receive funds that were collected by Biden's campaign team. Harris is accused of having an "unseemly greed" and this is supposedly the "biggest violation of campaign financing in American history."
At the end of June, Biden's campaign fund had approximately 95 million US Dollars. Harris' campaign team denies the allegations. The FEC has not commented on the ongoing proceedings.
An attorney from the Campaign Legal Center, a non-partisan observation group for elections, only gives the complaint slim chances. Harris, as the Democratic Vice Presidential candidate, was already a part of the "Biden for President" campaign of Joe Biden and should be entitled to the money, it is stated.
"Turn your attention elsewhere"
Charles Kretchmer Lutvak, spokesperson for Harris' campaign team, sees the lawsuit from the Trump camp as an attempt to distract the Republicans. "The MAGA faithful are envious that the Democrats are generating so much enthusiasm," writes he on the platform X. "We are mobilizing tens of thousands of volunteers, speaking with millions of voters, and will win this election. Feel free to be distracted by baseless lawsuits."
It is also unclear whether Harris would even need the money from Biden. Harris' campaign team reports that they have already raised 100 million US Dollars themselves since Sunday and have thus surpassed the balance of the Biden campaign in just a few days.
Joe Biden, the previous Democratic presidential candidate, gave in to demands from his own party on Sunday and announced his withdrawal as a candidate, expressing his support for Harris as his successor in the White House. A solution to the conflict through the electoral authorities before the presidential election on November 3 is considered unlikely.
Despite Trump's campaign team challenging the use of Biden's campaign funds for Harris' potential 2024 run, Harris' team denies the allegations and asserts that they are simply trying to divert attention due to Democratic enthusiasm. Interestingly, Harris' own campaign has already raised over 100 million USD, surpassing Biden's remaining funds.
