US election campaign - Trump will campaign for unity rally despite assassination attempt

Due to the attacks on him, ex-President Donald Trump intends to appeal for overcoming political division in the country at the Republican Party convention in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, according to his own statements in an interview with the tabloid "New York Post." He reportedly discarded his originally planned and very aggressive speech for the Republican Party convention and instead said, "I want to try to bring the country together." However, he admitted, "I don't know if it's possible. The people are very divided."

The four-day Republican Party convention in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, begins today. Trump is expected to be officially endorsed as the party's presidential candidate for the November election and give a significant speech there. Despite the attack on Saturday at a campaign rally where he was injured in the ear, the 78-year-old traveled to Milwaukee on Sunday.

"I had a very harsh speech completely prepared, really good, everything about the corrupt, terrible government," Trump told the "New York Post" further. "But I threw it away." He reportedly added that the different political positions, such as on the topic of immigration, would remain unchanged but that he wanted to bring the country together through success. He suggested that the campaign tone should now be more tempered.

The call from US President Joe Biden, whom he plans to challenge in the November election, was good, Trump continued. Biden was "very nice," according to Trump.

Biden warned the Americans in a Sunday evening (local time) speech about politically motivated violence and called for cooling down the heated political climate. "We are not enemies," he emphasized. Trump posted on his self-founded platform Truth Social in capital letters shortly after Biden's speech: "America unite!"
