Trump takes final say during TV debate
Next week, President Biden and his adversary Trump are set for a verbal clash on television. In the initial event, Fortuna favored Biden. However, the main challenge for him is the debate itself. He can't appear nervous. Trump, on the other hand, mustn't overdo it.
Donald Trump, the former President, will have the final say in the verbal duel during the first of the two scheduled TV debates next week. The decision was made following a coin toss, as announced by American media. The coin landed on Biden's campaign paper, marked as 1. This entity then chose whether it preferred Biden's opening stance or the closing remarks - and opted for the former.
Biden's team claimed the initial stance for the current US President. Consequently, the 81-year-old will be placed on the right side of the television screens for the audience during the TV debate on June 27 (local time), with Trump on the left.
Trump's team then decided on the order of the closing statements and, unsurprisingly, set that Trump should have the final word - after Biden's closing statement.
The microphones might go silent again
Biden and Trump agreed to hold two television debates in May. The first takes place on June 27 on CNN, and the second on September 10 on ABC. In the previous election, which Trump lost to Biden, they also held two TV debates. Notably, during the first debate, they frequently interrupted each other, especially Trump towards his opponent. During the second debate, the microphones were occasionally muted, especially when the other person was speaking. Trump's campaign team was highly upset about this. This tactic is to be maintained for the upcoming debate.
Biden and Trump are not yet officially nominated as presidential candidates for the election on November 5, but their nomination is widely believed to be a foregone conclusion. During the TV debates, both candidates, in the close race as per polls, must effectively promote their themes. Topics such as immigration, women's rights when it comes to abortions, the wars in Ukraine and Gaza could play a significant role.
Only a pen, paper, and water bottle
Experts also view the performances as a potential game-changer. Biden has appeared detached during recent appearances, at times appearing stiff. "He needs to deliver a good debate," explained communication expert Julius van de Laar recently in the "Berliner Morgenpost." "If he delivers a poor one or even appears frozen, that would be a significant setback for the Democrats."
On the other hand, Biden's major goal should be to "antagonize Trump so much, irritate him, that he briefly loses his cool. And that would then be this one viral moment that could be decisive for the campaign to show: Trump is absolutely unpredictable, do you really want someone like that in the White House?"
The candidates are reportedly provided only a pen, a sheet of paper, and a water bottle, according to CNN. During the 90-minute debate, which is being recorded in Atlanta, Georgia, there are to be two commercial breaks. During these, neither Biden nor Trump's teams are allowed to interact with them. Thus, there's no one to wake Biden up when he seems frozen, and on the other hand, no one can give Trump calming words when he becomes argumentative, stubborn, and egotistical with his claims and theories.
