US election campaign - Trump ally back on the loose - cheers at party conference
The former economic advisor of ex-US-President Donald Trump, Peter Navarro, was greeted with frenzied applause at the Republican Party convention in Milwaukee on the day of his release from prison in Miami. "I actually left the Miami prison early this morning", Navarro began his speech to an ecstatic audience, which he further heated up with several radical statements.
"Be careful if you get Trump, you'll be next", Navarro warned against US-President Joe Biden among other things. Biden's administration was responsible for their and Trump's legal issues, Navarro claimed. "If we don't control our government, they will control us." The Democrats also had their sights set on children, wanting to indoctrinate them with their "toxic views", Navarro added. He also focused on the topic of immigration and accused Biden of rolling out a "rug" at the US-Mexico border, over which only dangerous criminals were coming into the country. "In Trump's America, you'll be safe and our borders will be, too."
The 75-year-old had served a four-month prison sentence in March for contempt of the US Congress. He had refused to release documents and testify before the House Oversight Committee about the Capitol storm. Navarro was the first close Trump associate to serve time in this context. Meanwhile, Trump's former chief strategist, Steve Bannon, is also serving a four-month sentence.
