Tropical Storm Helena wreaks havoc on certain regions in the southeastern portion of the United States
In the southeastern United States, Hurricane "Helene" brings its full wrath. The storm leads to significant destruction in Georgia, Florida, North Carolina, Virginia, Tennessee, and Kentucky, resulting in numerous fatalities.
Approximately 20 lives have been lost due to Tropical Storm "Helene" in the southeastern U.S., with eleven confirmed deaths in Georgia as reported by Governor Brian Kemp. Many individuals remain trapped beneath collapsed and damaged structures. Additionally, the storm has claimed lives in both Florida and North Carolina, according to American news outlets. With some sources reporting 23 deaths and others stating 19, the exact death toll remains unclear.
An estimated three million people are without electricity, while homes have been destroyed, and entire towns have been submerged under floodwaters. Sections of Virginia, Tennessee, and Kentucky also suffered from power outages. Rescue teams evacuated an apartment complex in Atlanta due to flooding. The National Hurricane Center (NHC) continued to issue warnings of dangerous storm surges, winds, and heavy rainfall in the morning (local time).
The NHC advised those residing in the storm's path to adhere to any evacuation orders. NHC Director Michael Brennan previously stated that the storm surge was "unsurvivable." Authorities across the affected states urged citizens to seek shelter. The Taylor County Sheriff's Office in Florida encouraged those choosing not to evacuate to mark their name, date of birth, and other essential information on their arms or legs with a permanent marker, "to ensure they can be identified and their relatives notified."
"Helene" reached Florida with wind speeds of 225 kilometers per hour before weakening into a tropical storm. Experts noted that the hurricane was remarkably large for one originating in the Gulf of Mexico, with an area larger than 500 kilometers. The initial damage assessment was challenging due to the vast extent of the destruction. Insurance broker Gallagher Re estimated that preliminary private insurance losses could fall between three and six billion dollars.
The hurricane made landfall in Florida, causing extensive damage and tragically claiming lives within its boundaries. Furthermore, relief efforts are being coordinated across the state to locate and assist individuals trapped under debris.
