State files suit against partner - Trial for damages for Expo debacle begins

The dispute over the funding of the Baden-Württemberg Pavilion at Expo 2020 in Dubai will be heard in court from Tuesday. The hearing of the legal dispute between the state of Baden-Württemberg and the former project partners of the Pavilion begins at the Stuttgart Regional Court in the afternoon (2 pm). The state aims to establish that the partners are jointly liable to compensate it for all costs incurred and still to be incurred in connection with the implementation of the project, the court announced. A specific amount has not been mentioned yet.

The lawsuit is only about whether the project partners are liable, a court spokesperson said. The possible amounts for which this could amount to would then be the subject of another proceeding.

The approximately 15 million Euro Baden-Württemberg House at the Expo in Dubai was originally responsible for three partners: the Chamber of Engineers, Fraunhofer, and the Freiburg Economic, Touristic and Fair (FWTM). The building was supposed to be built with sponsorship funds and was therefore advertised as a "project from the economy for the economy". The state was initially only politically involved in the project and was only supposed to contribute 2.8 million Euros for the exhibition, but had to step in and cover most of the costs for the Pavilion construction.

The events surrounding the Pavilion also kept an investigative committee of the state parliament busy.

  1. The Stuttgart Regional Court, located in Baden-Württemberg's capital, Stuttgart, will oversee the legal dispute between the state and its former project partners regarding the Baden-Württemberg Pavilion at Expo 2020 in Dubai.
  2. The government of Baden-Württemberg is hoping to establish that its former partners share the financial responsibility for the project's costs, which include both those already incurred and those yet to be.
  3. The Stuttgart Regional Court hearing is a crucial step in resolving the funding dispute for the Baden-Württemberg Pavilion, which was initially backed by three partners: the Chamber of Engineers, Fraunhofer, and the Freiburg Economic, Touristic and Fair (FWTM).
  4. Economic policy and finances have played significant roles in the controversial Baden-Württemberg Pavilion project for Expo 2020 in Dubai, a main focal point of the collaborative efforts between government, finance, and partners.
  5. The potential financial consequences for the parties involved will be a topic for further court proceedings, according to a spokesperson for the Stuttgart Regional Court, following the hearing on their joint liability in relation to the Pavilion's funding in Dubai.
