Trial against Halle assassin for hostage-taking begins on January 25
The trial against the Halle attackers for the hostage-taking in Burg prison will begin on January 25, 2024. The indictment has been admitted and the main proceedings have begun, the Stendal district court announced. The trial is to take place in a specially secured room at Magdeburg district court.
The assassin, who is serving a life sentence with subsequent preventive detention for his crime on October 9, 2019, is said to have threatened several prison officers in Burg Prison in December 2022. The Naumburg public prosecutor's office accuses him of using a homemade gun to force the officers to open several doors for him to escape from prison.
The accused allegedly managed to get as far as the vehicle lock, where his escape attempt failed due to technical security measures, the district court continued in the statement. The charges are hostage-taking and violation of the Weapons Act. If convicted, the accused would face a prison sentence of between 5 and 15 years.
The assassin was sentenced to life imprisonment and subsequent preventive detention in December 2020. On October 9, 2019, the highest Jewish holiday Yom Kippur, the German had attempted to storm the synagogue in Halle and cause a massacre. When he did not succeed, he murdered two people near the synagogue. He is currently in prison in Lower Saxony.

During his time in the detention center, the Halle assassin was accused of making threats towards prison officers in January, leading to a hostage-taking situation. After the trial process begins on January 25, 2024, the accused could face up to 15 years in prison for hostage-taking and violating the Weapons Act.
