Tourist dies of fear of wasps
During a beach outing in Italy, a 47-year-old man is attacked by a wasp swarm. Panicking, he runs into the water and dies. The subsequent autopsy delivers an unexpected result: The man had not been stung at all.
A tourist from Ukraine died on a beach in Italy, possibly due to fear of wasp stings, according to police reports. The 47-year-old man suffered a heart attack or heart failure, as stated by the authorities, at the beach of the southern Italian city of Crotone.
Initially, the emergency services suspected that he had been stung by the insects and suffered an allergic shock. However, during the autopsy, no stings were found on his body. The engineer had planned a short vacation in Southern Italy with his family. When the wasp swarm appeared, he went into a panic and quickly ran into the water. He was found lifeless there. Help arrived too late.
According to the authorities, the wasps also attacked several helpers, which later complicated the recovery of the body. The city has since ordered the closure of the beach section. Several wasp nests had been built nearby, which are now to be destroyed.
Despite the incident causing chaos and multiple wasp stings to the rescue team, it was revealed that Tod, the Ukrainian tourist, had not been stung at all. In fact, Tod, an international engineer on a family vacation from Ukraine, had suffered a heart attack while attempting to escape the swarm in the nearby Italian waters.
