Tito Jackson, a prominent figure in the Jackson 5 musical group, passes away at the age of 70, as reported by his sons.
Tito was the third-born kid in the Jackson family, which boasts global icons like Michael and Janet, known for their music that continues to resonate with fans today.
"With a heavy heart, we're disheartened to share that our dear father, Tito Jackson, who's an inductee at the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, has unfortunately passed away. We're stunned, saddened, and heartbroken over this loss. Tito was an incredible person who always cared about others' welfare," his sons TJ, Taj, and Taryll said in an Instagram post late on Sunday.
Originally, the Jackson 5 consisted of brothers Jackie, Tito, Jermaine, Marlon, and Michael. This renowned family group, inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 1997, produced numerous No. 1 hits in the 1970s, such as "ABC," "I Want You Back," and "I'll Be There."
Under their father Joe Jackson's guidance, a steelworker and guitarist, the Jackson family made a name for themselves in music in Gary, Indiana. As their careers grew, they relocated to California.
Born on October 15, 1953, as Toriano Adaryll "Tito" Jackson, he was the quieter background singer and guitarist with the Jackson 5. While his brothers embarked on solo careers, including Michael who became one of the world's most recognized pop stars, Tito remained relatively unknown.
Michael Jackson passed away at age 50 on June 25, 2009.
Speaking to The Associated Press in 2009, Tito Jackson mentioned how his younger brother's demise brought them all closer.
"Definitely, it brought us closer. To acknowledge the love we have for each other when one of us isn't here, it's a significant loss," he said, reflecting on his deep sorrow.
Adding, "There are still moments when I can't believe it. I think that will never fade away," he shared his feelings of perpetual shock.
Tito Jackson confirmed in 2014 that he and his brothers still felt Michael's absence during their performances, which continued with international tours.
"I don't think we'll ever get accustomed to performing without him. He's sorely missed," he said, sharing they felt his spirit with them on stage, providing energy and creating smiles.
Before his demise, Tito posted a message on his Facebook page from Munich, Germany, on September 11, where he visited a memorial for Michael alongside his brothers.
"Before our concert in Munich, my brothers Jackie, Marlon, and I, visited the beautiful memorial commemorating our beloved brother, Michael Jackson. We're truly grateful for this remarkable place that honors not only his memory but also our shared legacy. Thanks to everyone keeping his spirit alive," he penned.
Tito Jackson released his first solo project, "Tito Time," in 2016, followed by a song called "One Way Street" in 2017. In an interview with The AP in 2019, he revealed he was working on his second album.
Tito Jackson is survived by his brothers Jermaine, Randy, Marlon, and Jackie, his sisters Janet, Rebbie, and Latoya, and their mother, Katherine. Sadly, their father passed away in 2018.
Tito Jackson's death was first reported by Entertainment Tonight.
"In their heartfelt tribute on social media, Tito's sons TJ, Taj, and Taryll mentioned how they will greatly miss their father, stating, 'We're a family, and us Jackson boys are heartbroken over this loss.'"
"Despite his brothers' significant solo careers, including Michael's global stardom, Tito continued to remain close to 'us' Jackson family, always supporting and sharing in their successes."
