- Thuringia's CDU seeks dialogue with BSW and SPD, yet no polling is scheduled.
The CDU in Thuringia has initiated dialogues with the alliance helmed by Sahra Wagenknecht and the SPD. Thuringia's CDU General Secretary, Christian Herrgott, revealed that the state executive committee had given him and CDU state party leader, Mario Voigt, permission to hold these discussions. It's important to note that these aren't full-fledged coalition or exploratory talks yet. The state executive committee's decision was consistent and unanimous.
No Alliance with AfD
Herrgott also clarified that their incompatibility resolution regarding the AfD remains intact. "That's a given: We won't alliance with the AfD. We acknowledged this before the election and it's still applicable post-election. The same applies to a coalition with the Left," Herrgott asserted. He underscored that they've just embarked on a "lengthy, lengthy, and thorough process."
Previously, CDU federal chairman, Friedrich Merz, had reiterated that the incompatibility resolution concerning the AfD and the Left remains valid, leaving the decision on how to deal with it to the state associations in Saxony and Thuringia.
Thuringia: Post-Election Impasse
The CDU ended up in the second place in the state election, trailing behind the AfD led by extreme-right leader Björn Höcke. However, the political landscape post-election is convoluted. Previously suggested coalition options like CDU, BSW, and SPD will not form a majority of seats in the new state parliament in Erfurt with only 44 seats. Additionally, the potential opposition from AfD and Left also holds 44 seats, leading to an impasse or a deadlock.
The state executive committee of the CDU also addressed personnel matters: They voted unanimously to have Voigt recontest the position of parliamentary group leader. The MP, Andreas Bühl, was chosen to run for the position of parliamentary business manager.
The CDU in Thuringia, despite its second-place finish in the state election, is actively engaging in dialogues with the alliance led by Sahra Wagenknecht and the SPD. Herrgott, the CDU's General Secretary, emphasized that their incompatibility resolution against allying with the AfD and the Left remains unchanged, as stated by CDU federal chairman Friedrich Merz before the election.
