Weather - Thunderstorms pass over southern Bavaria - Hundreds of engagements

Heavy thunderstorms with strong rain and hail caused full cellars, flooded streets, and traffic disruptions in the southern part of Bavaria. In Swabia, some streets were covered in hail, and the Fire Department and Police were required at hundreds of scenes.

Hundreds of interventions until midnight

The Police Presidium Swaben Sud/West reported around 320 interventions by midnight. The focus was therefore in the areas of Ost- and Oberallgäu, as well as in the western part of the Landkreis Lindau. The follow-up interventions, such as pumping out cellars, lasted into the night. At the presidium in Rosenheim, a spokesperson reported about 230 emergency calls.

The interventions went smoothly, according to reports, with no serious injuries reported initially. The helpers were mainly dealing with uprooted trees, flooded streets, and flooded cellars.

At the Ickinger Berg in the upper Bavarian district of Bad Tölz-Wolfratshausen, a piece of earth gave way and blocked a road for a while. In Icking itself, the town center was flooded, according to a dpa photographer, and cars were pulled out of the water by the Fire Department.

Accidents on rainy roads

Due to the wet roads, there were also some accidents on the autobahns during the night on Saturday. A 27-year-old driver, according to police reports, was driving too fast on the A73 near Forchheim. In a curve, he reportedly lost control of his car and crashed into the guardrail. Already on Friday afternoon, a few kilometers north on the same autobahn, a truck had overturned. The driver was also reportedly driving too fast at the time. Both drivers sustained minor injuries.

Occasionally, trees fell on train tracks. However, there were no significant disruptions to rail traffic, said a spokeswoman for the German Railways. The tracks were quickly cleared.

Cancellations of cultural events

The weather also had consequences for two cultural events in the Free State. The Open-Air event "Klassik am Odeonsplatz" was cancelled due to the threat of bad weather. Thousands of spectators had to leave their seats in the Munich city center earlier than planned and after the performance of soprano Anja Kampe and baritone Michael Volle. The premiere of the Regensburg Schlossfestspiele also fell victim to a thunderstorm. Just before the performance of the opera "Carmen" was to begin, the spectators were asked to leave via loudspeaker announcements.

  1. The heavy thunderstorms in the Allgäu region of Bavaria resulted in numerous accidents due to the unfavorable weather conditions.
  2. The Police in Kempten were busy handling numerous accident reports, as the thunderstorms caused chaos on the roads.

  5. The weather disruptions also affected cultural events, as the Open-Air event "Klassik am Odeonsplatz" in Munich was cancelled due to the threat of a thunderstorm.
  6. The Zwiefalten Abbey, a popular tourist destination in the Allgäu area, was also closed temporarily due to the flooding caused by the heavy rains.
