Weather - Thunderstorms and rain dampen the mood for the European Championships in NRW
The second semifinal of the European Championship is taking place and besides thousands of English people, who have mostly stayed in North Rhine-Westphalia (NRW) for the past few weeks, around 100,000 people from the Netherlands are expected in Dortmund. However, it is unclear whether or to what extent the football festival will take place. The German Weather Service (DWD) warns of thunderstorms and heavy showers. Even though it is pleasantly warm with highest temperatures of 25 to 28 degrees Celsius in the summer, some fan zones in NRW have already been closed.
According to the forecasts, the weather will not change significantly in the coming days. On Thursday, after a pleasant morning, showers and thunderstorms are expected in the afternoon. It remains summery warm with temperatures between 24 and 27 degrees Celsius and high humidity.
The DWD also predicts that rain will only let up briefly at night on Friday and during the day. Many showers and recurring thunderstorms are expected. Towards the end of the week, temperatures will decrease slightly but will still remain around the 20-degree mark.
The semifinal match is primarily attracting a large number of Dutch fans in Dortmund, which is located in North Rhine-Westphalia (NRW). Regrettably, some fan zones in the region have had to close due to the inclement weather. The German Weather Service has issued warnings about upcoming thunderstorms and heavy rain showers, which might affect the European Championship. Despite the forecasts suggesting no significant weather change, threats of thunderstorms and showers persist, particularly on Thursday afternoon and Friday.
