Weather Warning - Thunderstorm with heavy rain, hail and tornadoes expected
Heavy thunderstorms and local strong rain are expected by the German Weather Service (DWD) in the night and on Friday. Storm and hail are also possible, according to an evening warning bulletin. Initially, there are expected to be isolated strong thunderstorms in the southeastern part of Germany. In the second half of the night, meteorologists in the west and southwest are forecasting new thunderstorms or heavy rain.
The DWD is expecting heavy rain in the southeastern part of Germany first, with up to 20 liters per square meter in a short time, locally even greater rainfall amounts are possible. In addition, hail or tornadoes with wind speeds of up to 85 kilometers per hour are possible.
After midnight, local thunderstorms with rainfall amounts of up to 30 liters per square meter in a short time or up to 40 liters per square meter in a few hours are expected. Tornadoes and hail are also possible again.
According to the forecast, on Friday there is expected to be heavy rain in the west and northwest of Germany. In addition to heavy rain, there is a risk of isolated tornadoes and hail across Germany. The DWD has issued an increased risk of thunderstorms.
In the Bavarian Alpine foothills, the weather service expects heavy thunderstorms from late morning to early afternoon, with the risk of occasional severe tornadoes. Large hailstones up to three centimeters in size are also not ruled out.
In the southwest, thunderstorms are expected for the afternoon. However, these will not be widespread. Local thunderstorms cannot be ruled out.
The unsettled weather in Germany, as predicted by DWD, includes the possibility of more thunderstorms, just as Sturmböe, translated to 'Storm-bow' in English, often signifies a threatening weather situation. The weather service in Offenbach also warns about potential tornadoes, apart from heavy rain, in several parts of Germany.
