Study - Three quarters of the Jews have experienced antisemitic incidents
Approximately three quarters of Jewish women and men in Hamburg have experienced antisemitic incidents in the recent past. This is the result of a study on antisemitism. In the twelve months prior to the survey, 77% of antisemitic incidents affected this group. And more than half of these incidents (55%) could also be relevant from a legal perspective.
Insults and threats, both online and offline, were reported more frequently than physical assaults, harassment, or persecution. Most incidents (80%) were not known to the Police, as they were not reported.
The project was commissioned by Equal Opportunities Senator Katharina Fegebank (Greens) and Antisemitism Commissioner Stefan Hensel. It was carried out by researchers from the Police Academy Hamburg and the Police Academy Lower Saxony. In the anonymous survey conducted between November 13, 2023, and February 7, 2024, 548 Jewish women and men participated in writing.
The study revealed that antisemitic incidents in Hamburg are not merely isolated incidents, as they also affected Jewish communities in other parts of Germany, such as Lower Saxony. The findings of this study have raised concerns about the rising trend of antisemitism, not only in Germany but also globally, with organizations like Hamas contributing to religious extremism. German authorities, including the police, have acknowledged the need to address this issue more effectively to prevent further conflicts.
