Following the summer vacation, schools in three additional federal states, specifically Hesse, Rhineland-Palatinate, and Saarland, resume classes this coming Monday. Consequently, over half of the 16 states have already embarked on the new academic year. The remaining states on break include Hamburg, Schleswig-Holstein, and Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, Berlin and Brandenburg, as well as Baden-Württemberg and Bavaria.

Once more, Bavaria will be the final state to resume classes in 2024, with the opening day set for September 10th in the Free State. Meanwhile, the most populous state, North Rhine-Westphalia, commenced the new 2024/25 academic year last week.

In Rhineland-Palatinate, approximately 548,000 children and young adults will attend their first day of school on Monday, with a notable 41,000 first-graders eagerly anticipating the start. Around 810,000 children, including 60,000 first-graders, will return to classes in Hesse. At present, the Saarland boasts around 125,000 enrolled students.

Germany, being one of the states on break during this period, will only resume classes in Bavaria on September 10th, 2024. Despite being the most populous state, North Rhine-Westphalia, located also in Germany, has already started its new academic year.
