Weather - Threat of thunderstorms in large parts of Germany for the European Championship match

Germany faces another round of heavy weather on Saturday. Areas potentially affected are Baden-Württemberg, Rhineland-Palatinate, Saarland, Hessen, North Rhine-Westphalia, Lower Saxony, and Thuringia, according to the German Weather Service (DWD) on Saturday morning. The meteorologists issued preliminary warnings. These weather events could occur from Saturday evening until late into Sunday night.

They coincide with the German national football team's match against Denmark in the Euro Championship at 9 pm in Dortmund. Traditionally, many fans follow the quarterfinals at public viewing events. Several fan zones were already forced to close temporarily due to bad weather in the past.

According to the forecast, the evening could be quite uncomfortable in a wide band from the southwest to the center. Possible are heavy showers with intense heavy rain of up to 80 liters per square meter within a few hours and large hail. "The risk of damage and danger is significantly increased," it was stated. "The complex will shift north-eastward during the night, the risk of tornadoes and large hail decreases accordingly."

Already on Thursday, heavy weather caused numerous interventions by the fire department and traffic disruptions in large parts of Germany. Affected were Baden-Württemberg, Hessen, Thuringia, North Rhine-Westphalia, Lower Saxony, Hamburg, and Mecklenburg-Vorpommern.

Already in June, it rained heavily. According to the DWD monthly balance, an average of 91 liters per square meter fell. The highest monthly rainfall amounts, according to the meteorologists, were at the Alpine fringe: More than 250 liters have fallen there in June so far. In northern Brandenburg, it remained significantly drier with less than 20 liters per square meter.

  1. Despite the heavy weather forecasted for Sunday, many football fans in Germany are eagerly awaiting the German national team's match against Denmark in the European Football Championship.
  2. The quarterfinals of the EM are scheduled to take place in Dortmund at 9 pm, attracting a large crowd despite the potential weather disruptions in North Rhine-Westphalia.
  3. In Thuringia, residents are also preparing for the weekend, aware of the weather alerts issued by the DWD for their region.
  4. The European Football Championship match between Germany and Denmark is not the only notable event happening in Berlin this weekend; the city is also known for its vibrant public viewing events during major soccer tournaments.
  5. The DWD forecasts heavy showers and hailstorms in various German states, including Rhineland-Palatinate, Saarland, and Hesse, affecting potential public viewing events or fan zones.
  6. The soccer-enthusiasts in Lower Saxony are carefully monitoring the weather predictions, hoping for a clear and enjoyable match experience.
  7. The German Weather Service (DWD) has released warnings for Baden-Württemberg, the state hosting the biggest soccer tournament in Germany, the Bundesliga, warning of potential storm damage.
  8. Fans in other regions like Baden-Württemberg and Rhineland-Palatinate are considering alternative viewing options to protect themselves from the heavy weather events.
  9. After witnessing heavy weather causing numerous interventions by the fire department and traffic disruptions in various areas of Germany earlier this week, the anticipation of another stormy weekend in Germany increases concerns among many residents.
