Weather - Threat of storms in the south and east

Thunderstorms with heavy rain are moving over parts of Germany. According to the German Weather Service (DWD), there is particularly a local risk of severe thunderstorms with heavy rain, large hail, and occasional strong gusts of wind in the south and east.

The reason for this is Tropical Depression "Elke", whose core is located over the North Sea and is pushing warm, southwesterly air towards Germany, as DWD meteorologist Sebastian Schappert stated.

A heavy thunderstorm had already passed over Berlin in the afternoon. The fire department called up additional volunteer fire departments for expected damages. The emergency services advise staying indoors in such situations, closing windows, and securing objects on balconies.

The danger passes in the night

However, in the north and west of Germany, only isolated showers and thunderstorms are forecasted. Sometimes the sun even comes through the clouds. It will be warm and muggy with temperatures between 22 and 28 degrees. The warmest it will be in the east, with temperatures up to 33 degrees. The threat of storms subsides at night, but showers and thunderstorms continue.

On Thursday, it will remain changeable in the east and south, with some showers and thunderstorms still possible. They will gradually fade away in the evening. However, another low pressure system approaches at night on Friday, bringing strong showers and thunderstorms with local storm risks.

  1. The approaching Tropical Depression "Elke" over the North Sea is responsible for the severe thunderstorms moving over Hesse, resulting in heavy rain and strong winds.
  2. Despite the passing thunderstorm, Berlin anticipates additional damages, prompting the fire department to call up volunteer teams for support.
  3. Offenbach, situated in Hesse, is also under the threat of heavy rain, storms, and large hail due to the stormy weather conditions originating from the North Sea.
  4. The DWD meteorologist, Sebastian Schappert, warned that storms with heavy rain and strong gusts are more prevalent in the south and east of Germany, and advised residents to stay indoors for safety.
  5. Berlin's weather changes from afternoon thunderstorms to warm and muggy temperatures of up to 33 degrees during the night, while the storm threat subsides, but rain and thunderstorms persist in some parts of Germany.
